10th October marks the day to embrace oats and all that goes with them. World Porridge Day celebrates one of the most nutritious breakfasts you can eat, its history & origins.

It is a rich and delicious food that’s made from that most healthful of grains, Oats. It’s warm and filling thick and toothsome, and is the foundation of breakfast for people all over the world. But where did Porridge originally come from?

The History

Porridge is the traditional national dish of Scotland and has been keeping the people of this country healthy for hundreds of years. A competition is held every year in the Scottish Highland village of Carrbridge known as the World Porridge Making Championship. It is held to determine the porridge champion who best exemplifies the flavor and experience of this food.

But the Scots have always been known for having a progressive world view and to care deeply about people everywhere, and as such Carrbridge came together in 2009 with Mary’s Meals (https://www.marysmeals.org.uk/) to help provide rich nourishing porridge to aid starving children in developing countries.

Marys Meals

Mary’s Meals is named after Mary, the mother of Jesus, who brought up her own child in poverty. Their vision is that every child receives one daily meal in their place of education.

Mary’s Meals works to provide food to children all over the world and works in far-flung places like Malawi to help keep children fed throughout the school year. The organization “feeds the nutrient-rich maize-based porridge Likuni Phala to about 320,000 children in Malawi each year.
1.5 millionchildren in 18 of the world’s poorest countries benefit from their efforts, the meal encouraging children to go to school and build their education so they can lead themselves, their communities, and their countries out of poverty.

The 2009 day to celebrate these efforts also included gatherings in the United States, France, Malawi, Bosnia and Sweden.
