Yes we are talking about ‘Pink October’ – a month which is dedicated to raise awareness about Breast Cancer amongst men and women around the world. Each year around the world, $6billion is raised by the supporters, for the treatments of breast cancer through various awareness campaigns and activities. There are people walking, running, racing, biking, rallying, driving, or even giving free hugs to raise awareness. You’ll also find nails to faces to famous monuments & buildings painted or lit up in Pink to support this campaign & raise awareness about this fatal disease, which can be nearly diagnosed & treated well 90 – 95% just by self-awareness.

In UAE, 30% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are already in the third stage. You can stay breast aware by following these simple steps –

  1. Know what is normal for you
  2. Regular self examination
  3. Report any changes without delay to your doctor
  4. Make sure you attend breast screening if you’re 50 or over ( However, it is estimated that, 25% of women with breast cancer are less than 50 yrs old)

Some of the common Risk Factors for Breast Cancer include:

  • Being a female
  • Late age conceiving
  • Women having more than one terminated pregnancies
  • Smoking & alcohol
  • Obesity
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome

According to Dubai Health Authority, one in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.  Breast cancer is the leading cancer in the UAE, accounting for a quarter of all cancers. So, here is our effort to bring you a list of some of the remarkable initiatives that are taking place in Dubai.

Pink Caravan (

pinkcaravan logoThe Pink Caravan is a Pan UAE breast cancer awareness initiative launched in 2011 by Friends of Cancer Patients, a UAE charitable organization, under the directives and with the support of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. The event strives to raise community awareness to combat breast cancer and promote the concept of early detection and regular check-ups among UAE society.

Over 50 events are organized during this month which include Pink Caravan Riders’ shows, educational workshops, free screenings, seminars on breast self-examination, and visits to a large number of companies, schools and organizations to educate staff and students about the disease. A range of UAE and international organizations, companies and businesses, including The Nail Spa, Ralph Lauren, Nine West Arabia, EGMA Optics, Fitness First, Fairmont Dubai, Charles and Keith Store, Nestle Middle East and Jumeirah Primary School and many others collaborate in these events. Think Pink Campaign – Joyalukkas & Aster DM Healthcare Initiative

For a fifth consecutive year, jewellery brand Joyalukkas is carrying out its ‘Think Pink’ initiative for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in association with Aster DM Healthcare. Under the slogan, ‘Check it. Beat it.’, the emphasis of this year’s campaign is the importance of regular checks.

Aster DM Healthcare has joined hands with Joyalukkas in helping reach the campaign across the masses.  Aster is providing free checks at all its medical centers & hospitals across UAE along with a 45 percent discount on breast cancer tests. A wellness card issued as part of the campaign will help participant’s avail self-examination training by an expert. A diamond voucher worth Dh250 is also included with the package. ‘Check it, Beat it’, the campaign aims to spread awareness not only among women but also men.

The Burjuman Safe & Sound Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign

logoNow in its 19th year, Safe & Sound is one of the largest and most comprehensive breast cancer campaigns in the Middle East. A key element of this year’s campaign is the introduction of the new Safe & Sound app. Thru this app participants will be able to run and walk, tracking their progress at the same time. Participants are invited to donate money directly to Al Jalila Foundation and Brest Friends via the app’s built in payment gateway. Not just limited to individuals, participants can walk or donate on behalf of an organization, which allows corporations to support Safe & Sound as part of their CSR initiatives. If the total distance walked through the app reaches the 50,000km milestone in 2015, BurJuman has pledged to donate a further AED100,000 to the cause. Download the SafeandSound app now. One can also join the BurJuman Pink Challenge and be part of the Pink Community to help raise awareness on breast cancer across their social medias accounts. Simply, post your pictures dressed in pink or showing the 3-finger symbol indicative of the “3 steps to beat breast cancer” – and hashtag #PinkBurJuman.

‘Pink It Now’ Campaign By Zulekha Hospital

pinkitThe ‘Pink It Now’ campaign has been developed by Zulekha Hospital with the active support of Ford Warriors in Pink, a Ford Motor Company breast cancer awareness initiative and Dubai Islamic Bank. The same is rolled out at both hospitals in Dubai and Sharjah. Until 31st December 2015, women over the age of 40 are eligible for free mammogram & specialist consultations by Zulekha Hospital oncologists and surgeons. Know more :


Irish Medical Clinic

The Irish Medical Clinic is offering free breast examinations and breast education to female patients from 18th  to the 22nd October 2015, at their clinic situated in  Al Wasl Road.
